Great bustard (Otis tarda)

The biggest flying bird in Europe. Its displays are dazzling!

Little bustard (Tetrax tetrax)

The Castro Verde SPA has the highest population density of Little bustard in the Western Europe!

Black-bellied sandgrouse (Pterocles orientalis)

We see them in the more arid areas and using small ponds to drink water.

Griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus)

Black vulture (Aegypius monachus)

Iberian imperial eagle (Aquila adalberti)

Bonelli's eagle (Aquila fasciata)

Golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetus)

Black-winged kite (Elanus caeruleus)

Lesser kestrel (Falco naumanni)

The Castro Verde SPA has the largest colonies in the country of this migratory hawk!

 

European roller (Coracias garrulus)

The Castro Verde SPA is the main reproduction area in Portugal! Just like Lesser kestrel, this specie nidifies in cavities and ruins and also on trees.


Montagu's harrier (Circus pygargus)

Montagu's harrier smooth flights over the crops os wheat (and oats), area a hallmark of Spring in the Castro Verde SPA...
