Historical and Cultural Heritage

COME LEARN ABOUT THE HISTORY AND EXTREMLY RICH CULTURE OF THIS PORTUGUESE REGION!

Cultural heritage of the Castro Verde SPA has a strong agricultural imprint.

"Montes” are the typical form of settlement in Alentejo, consisting of a rural house, tradicionally built, on  a land mostly occupied by extensive farming of dry cereals and  exensive grazing of cattle, while there can also exist some small home gardens beside the house.

Farming of cereals and the production of sheep are the hallmarks of the agricultural sector of the area. Its relevance is visible in gastronomy, where bread and lamb have  proeminent roles, together with aromatic herbs and olive oil – common ingredients in the traditional cuisine of  the Baixo Alentejo region.

The musical richness is another mark of this territory, whose coral groups of "cante alentejano" and the sound of "viola campaniça" (musical instrument), are known and very much appreciated.

The area also has a rich history and legends, dating back  to ancient people, like the romans.

The inheritance of these people and the architectural heritage of more recent centuries are other interesting cultural aspects that visitors can explore.
