LIFE Lince Moura/Barrancos honored as best of the best in Europe

The LIFE project "Recovery of Iberian lynx habitat in the Moura/Barrancos Site" (acronym Lince Moura/Barrancos), which took place between October 2006 and December 2009, carried out by LPN – League for the Protection of Nature, in partnership with Fauna & Flora International (FFI) and the Centre for Social Research and Intervention (CIS / ISCTE - IUL), was awarded by the European Commission as one of the "Best of the Best" LIFE - Nature projects evaluated in 2010. Of the approximately 60 LIFE - Nature projects that were conducted in different European countries and evaluated in 2010, only six received this distinction by the European Commission.

LIFE Lince Moura/Barrancos contributed to the recovery and conservation of habitats favourable to the presence of the Iberian lynx in the Moura/Barrancos Site, including the recovery of the wild rabbit natural populations, the lynx’s main prey. The key to its success resulted mainly from the cooperation and confidence of all landowners and managers who have signed management agreements with LPN, under LIFE Lince Moura/Barrancos, allowing the implementation of habitat management and conservation measures focused on the Iberian Lynx. The involvement of partners and of the Technical and Scientific Advisory Group ensured greater capacity for action, multidisciplinary knowledge and consistency on the tasks development.

LIFE Lince Moura/Barrancos has clearly showed that the compatibility between human activities and nature conservation is possible, particularly for the preservation of the Iberian lynx and its habitat. LPN believes that the recognition by the European Commission motivates and rewards the efforts of all involved as well as the project results.
