In the beginning of May we started a rigorous monitoring programme, to evaluate the success of the activities that took place in the previous months.
Every shelter we built in the intervention area was visited by a technician, to determine if the rabbits were using them (most of the “marouços” is in full use, even the ones we built in the last three months). We also visited the pastures and other planted areas to determine the progress (growth and presence of seeds) of our endeavours.
The 16 Ha of forest that we planted in February (the trees in this area burned in 2006) are also progressing nicely and we found several little trees growing (although the wild boars that roam the area did some damage).
The continuous direct monitoring of the intervention area is the only way to determine the success of the project actions (and also to identify aspects that should be improved in future activities).
